Widnes Running Club Weekly Roundup - we 9th Feb 25
Sat 8th Feb - The Tatton Park 10k was completed by Nisha Parmar, Emma Wilson and Alex Smith. It’s great to see our friend Nisha staying in touch with her club mates
Saturday also saw two of our favourite club mates Olive and Max supported by the lovely but less popular Rob Lloyd and Paul Busow at the CaniX Delamere. Max (and Paul) are currently sitting in 2nd place in this competition - woof woof !
Sun 9th Feb - fresh from her success at The Tatton Park 10k Emma (I’ll do anything to avoid making the Sunday lunch) Wilson took on and conquered the Aintree 10k. Emma is in direct competition with Aunty Christine Bonnar for the most races completed in one weekend
Sunday also saw the final NW Cross Country Sunday League race at the lovely Croxteth Hall Park. The following people thoroughly enjoyed muddy fields, woodland and swimming through ponds: Harry Hignett, Christine Bonnar, Peter Speakman, Rob (why do one race a weekend when you can do two) Lloyd, Fran (The Man) Hourigan, Grace Gorst, Danny Lloyd, Rachel Waring and Lisa (I love Giraffes) Webb
Lastly on Sunday - your friend and mine Steph Savage took on the Nick Beer 10k in sunny Llandudno. A savage route of inclines and declivity.

Welcome to this week’s parkrun roundup. This weekend we had over 50 runners at 17 different venues.

Neil, John, Paula & Eve were at Burnage which they can highly recommend. Ray and Lyn finally got Chester boxed off.

Katie travelled to Greenfield Valley to get a G for the alphabet challenge. A different challenge for Liz, Colin & Hayley who got their west for the compass challenge at Henley Wood, Oswestry.

Ste & Ian took on a fantastic but challenging course at Lyme Park. Jan and Paul were up north at the small & friendly Maryport Prom.

Carl and Stacey did a nice 3 lapper at Millfield and then had a cracking breakfast in Easingwold. Ben finally made it to Sutton Manor where he met up with some more club members and other local running friends.

We also had runners at Congleton, Delamere, Kew Woods, Knowsley, Markshall Estate, Phoenix, Southport, St Helens and, of course, Widnes.

Well done to everyone who ran or volunteered this weekend.

Widnes Running Club Weekly Roundup - we 2nd Feb 25
Saturday - Halewood 5k. This ever popular race was attended and completed by Colin Kennedy, Rob Ladinowski and Captain Dawn Hignett. Well done to Dawn who managed a 2.5 minute improvement in this race in just one month ! It’s amazing what you can achieve once you’ve eaten all the Christmas chocolates
Saturday - nearly as glamorous as Halewood is Dubai. Here our multitalented and multi named Tania Sobey-Raymond excelled at the Sketchers Performance Run and got 3rd in her age category (never ask a lady her age!).
Saturday - Pendle Way in a Day (Yes you read this correctly). Our amazing non avian Amy Bird ran 45 miles through mud and tough hilly terrain to complete her first ultra - very well done Amy.
Sunday - Rob (the trail king) Lloyd had a fantastic day at the Doynton Hard Half marathon in South Gloucestershire. Great work Rob

After Widnes parkrun was cancelled due to a police

After Widnes parkrun was cancelled due to a police incident in the park our members spread out looking for alternative venues and we ended up with over 50 runners at 19 different parkruns.

Katie went to Crewe where she tried to fool us by getting her dog to stand in front of the parkrun pop-up. Alex was in Scotland and ran on a lovely, picturesque course at Crichton. Carl went to bag another Yorkshire parkrun and visited Cross Flatts, notable for colourful murals and hills.

John, Neil, Eve, Cathy and Paula ran at Greenfield Valley in North Wales. Paul, Max, Chris, Zoe and John joined the compass club after running at Henley Woods, Oswestry. Roy and Tracy diverted from Conwy when it was cancelled and made it to Nova, Prestatyn just in time for the start. Also in Wales Marc was 1st finisher and Sameera was 2nd female finisher at Old Railway Trail in Llangollen.

Rob ran a nice trail and tarmac 3 lapper at Pomphrey Hill, Andy was at Rothay Park in the beautiful Lake District, Jon and friends felt like they ran mainly uphill at St Helens and our biggest turnout was at Sutton Manor, one of the nearest venues to Widnes.

We also had members running at Colchester Castle, Congleton, Croxteth Hall, Delamere, Heartlands, Phoenix, Wepre and York.

Well done to everyone who ran or volunteered today.

No racers to report on for Saturday.

Sunday saw young Ryan Black thrive and perform strongly at the Cannock 16 mile Trig Race. Who’d have known this was Ryan’s first race in his WRC shirt !
Sunday also saw a good WRC turnout at the Stockport Daffodil 10k race. Grace Gorst, Colin Laycock, Steph Humphries, Tania Sobey-Raymond, Sandra Bentley, Steph Savage, Lea Lea (so good they named her twice).
Great running on a course with some tough hills.
All I can say is you lot must hate making a Sunday Dinner and will do anything to avoid it (although one of you is a very good Cooke). X

This week we had over 50 runners at 13 different parkruns.

We’ll start the roundup at home in Widnes which celebrated its 10th birthday today. Over 40 of our members ran or volunteered there today. Happy 10th birthday Widnes parkrun 🎂

Further afield Jan and Paul visited Oaklands parkrun for the first time before heading to the NEC for this year’s running show.

Chris, Paul and super dog Max went to Worsley Woods but found out it was cancelled while they were in the car park. A quick dash to Salford got them to Peel parkrun just in time to catch the start and they bumped into Ste and Ian.

Neil was in London and ran at Richmond Park to get his R. He’d definitely recommend this parkrun if you’re visiting London.

Joanne travelled ‘next door’ to Warrington where she had a great run and met a giraffe.

We also had runners at Beeston, Chelmsford Central, Crosby, Hackworth, Heartlands, Kingsbury Water, Princes and St Helens.

A late parkrun roundup this week due to a very bus

A late parkrun roundup this week due to a very busy weekend.

On the weekend when we all (well a lot of us) got our Z we had over 60 runners out and about at 13 different venues.

Liam, Jon and some friends took on the forest path undulations at Delamere. Colin, Hayley and some friends, including Dolores the giraffe, ran at Haigh Woodland where Colin completed his 250th parkrun - congratulations Colin.

Katie and Simon ran a 5 lap course at Highbury Fields which they said was in a lovely park and had a really friendly atmosphere. In warmer climes Ryan was 5th place finisher at Seymour in Australia, we’re not sure if he beat the tank!

Over in Holland around 30 club members had a fantastic, if extremely cold, weekend in The Hague to claim a Z for the parkrun alphabet challenge at Zuiderpark parkrun. For Andy, John, Alex, Carl, Stacey, Colette, Dave and Cathy it was the completion of the alphabet challenge - congratulations to all of them.

We also had runners at Birkenhead, Congleton, Knowsley, Northwich, Phoenix, St Helens, University Parks and, of course, Widnes.

Calling all C25K runners. Just a message to confirm “IT IS ON!” this evening Monday 20th Jan and tomorrow morning Tuesday 21st Jan 09:15 at Victoria Park. For this evening please park at St Peter’s & Paul school car park and walk to the track through the big gates. Arrive 18:15 for an 18:30 start

Saturday - Alyn Waters 10k Wrexham was completed by the 3 Amigos Ste (Moss not Goss but still the Boss) Moss, Danny (the champion of the world) Lloyd and the excellent Ian (alive alive O) O’Keeffe.
Sunday saw a huge turnout from the club at the seasonally tough (post Christmas binge) and usually inclement Helsby Half.
The delayed start couldn’t have helped people stay warm but it didn’t prevent our club mates faring well.
As you can see Mark (the dreamboat) Worthington loved it, Kimberley (Chorlton and the Wheelies) Wheeler rolled around, Sophie (top vegan) Louise broke the 2hr barrier, Julie (not Oliver) Reed got a 5 min PB, Sandra (gently) Bentley, Danny (another champion of the world) Garner, Jordan (Woodrow) Wilson, Graham (where everybody knows your name) Cheers, Charlie (Farlie) Harding, Caroline & Jonathan (tore themselves away from track) Williams to smash the 2hr barrier, Lisa (off of The Simpsons) Galloway, David (off of The Monkees) Jones, Paul (the slender man) Wilson, David (happy not) Cross and Jan (she runs in her sleep) Swales all did themselves proud.

The magnificent Amy Bird took on the Rasslebock Winter Run.
This entailed 6 hours to run as many 5.79km loops as you could.
Amy managed over 31miles for the day which included her morning’s parkrun. Very well done Amy a great start to the year and fantastic preparation for your upcoming ultra.

This week’s freezing weather meant that all but one of the North West parkruns were cancelled today making for a very short roundup this week.

Chris, Paul and John headed south to East Park parkrun in Wolverhampton and we also had one runner at Heartlands and one at Sherwood Pines.

A group of our members also met up for a run or walk round the park in Widnes followed by a visit to the cafe for cake to celebrate Karl’s birthday.

Hopefully things will be back to normal next week!

TO ALL OF OUR NEW COUCH TO 5K RUNNERS - we’re sorry to share that we are pushing our start dates back by a week due to the icy conditions again. Whilst temperatures are due to start to rise we don’t think they will have warmed up enough to melt the underlying ice and compacted snow by early Monday evening. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

We’re sorry to share that our first sessions for Couch to 5k tonight and tomorrow morning have had to be cancelled due to the weather conditions.

We had hoped that as the weather improved today the conditions at the track and in the park would have improved enough for us to go ahead. However as the day has progressed the weather has become more inclement and there are large pools of water in both venues, with some residual slush. There is also a new weather warning in place for ice, and we have real concerns this would cause too much of a hazard and the risk of injury for us to go ahead comfortably.

We’re really disappointed as we were looking forward to meeting you and starting your running journey with you. We’ll try again next week.

Widnes Running Club Weekly Roundup we 5th Jan 25
Tuesday 31st Dec - Trail and Ale 7 miler at Rivington Pike. Yet another great turnout from the club. Rob Lloyd settled a personal vendetta / score with the lady pictured holding her own against our Mighty Rob in the home straight. Capt Dawn (slick hands) Hignett had a great day running with friends but more so as both of her wonderful sons also raced and performed well.
Hayley & Fran Hourigan maintained the family theme and excelled on what is a tough course. Our own Mighty Mouse Jan Swales ran another solid race. Katie Dean put on a good show and out muscled the competition in the sprint finish. Amy (now everybody’s heard about the) Bird continues to impress especially with her preparation for her upcoming Ultra. Steph (she’s soft not) Savage showed her usual grit and determination attributes gained through her undying support of the Wigan Warriors. Rachel Waring proved once more what a strong athlete she is. Adam (he’s handsome) Hampson rounded off a tremendous 2024 with another impressive performance.
Well done to all our club mates who have raced, run regularly, come back from injury, supported others, run with others in 2024 you all make this club a joy to be a part of X

The cold weather didn’t deter our runners today

The cold weather didn’t deter our runners today as over 70 members visited 10 different parkruns.

We had a large turnout at Widnes as today’s run was in our 2024/25 club championship so points were at stake. Special mention to Caroline who completed her 200th parkrun and Helen who completed her 100th parkrun at Widnes today.

Over in Austria Tracy ran at Donaupark parkrun which she said was icy cold but in a beautiful city.

Closer to home Alex Nisha, Paul, John and super dog Max safely navigated the icy paths to get to Stretford parkrun in Manchester.

Unfortunately we haven’t managed to get any more photos this week but we also had runners at Colchester Castle, Congleton, Faskally Forest, Fell Foot, Heartlands, Knowsley and St Helens.
