Welcome to the latest Widnes Running Club roundup.
This week I have been mostly eating (running) The Warrington Way, The Tatton Park 10k and Half Marathon and Bourbon biscuits x

Our very own Toy Boy Roy Boy Rawlinson and Lyn Baby Spice Frances zipped around the Tatton 10k x
Taking on the Half Marathon and earning a course PB was “Hey Sandy” Sandra Bentley x

The Warrington Way was a key event last weekend. We had several brave folk who took on the full 40 mile course. Worth a mention in this category Danny (last minute dot com) Garner, Cutie Katie Kyle, Carolyn (Eleanor)Rigby, Ryan (Thor?)Black, Tim (Gravy) Browning, Amy (is that a) Bird (or a plane), Hayley (rain) MacGugan and Marvellous Martin Foulkes x
A huge well done to you all - you’re very very brave x

We also had several pairs and fours teams taking on this muddy challenge with team names that showed creative prowess:

For the last couple of months we thought we’d be sharing just a handful of new club records… but by gum, have you lot been busy! 😄There was even a couple of clubs records set in the time it took us to make this post.

Our runners have been smashing club records across all distances and in a wide range of age categories. The hard work, commitment, and passion from our members just keeps shining through.

Huge congratulations to everyone who set a new record — and to everyone out there chasing club/personal records. And keep your eyes peeled for some more updates of the ones set today 🙌

Another challenging week of weather, with yet another storm and a huge amount of rainfall in the last 24 hours. So a massive well done to everyone who braved the conditions and made it out to parkrun this morning!

Despite the weather, 47 of our members were out running across 15 different events today. 💪

🎉 Milestone Celebrations
• Stacey completed her 250th parkrun at Rosliston – huge congratulations!
• Andy took things international with a parkrun over in Poland – great effort!

Our runners could be spotted at:
Blackpool, Congleton, Heartlands, Huddersfield, Lanark Moor, Phoenix, Preston, Rosliston, St Helens, Sutton Manor, Warrington, Woolaton Hall, and of course… Widnes!

👏 A big well done to everyone who ran this weekend, whatever the course or conditions.
🙏 And a heartfelt thank you to all the incredible volunteers who make parkrun possible every single week.

The weather may have taken a turn this week with a few rainy training runs, but our Widnes Running Club members have been grafting as usual!

Tuesday saw the Magic 4s session with decreasing recoveries led by Rob, followed by some tough Zatopek sessions on the track Wednesday with Cathy. On Thursday, our muster runs kept everyone moving under the guidance of our fantastic run leaders.

It was a quieter week on the parkrun front, with many Widnes Running Club members taking on Warrington Way. Even so, we still had 37 members taking part across 12 events, with some joining later relay legs or doing a brilliant job supporting runners along the route.

This week we were represented at: Bolton, Conyngham Hall, Delamere, Ellesmere Port, Fountains Abbey, Gloucester City, Kew Woods, Northwich, Shipley Country, St Helens, Sutton Manor, and of course Widnes.

A special mention goes to Emma, completing her first parkrun back at Widnes since welcoming her beautiful baby boy — great to see you out there again. And a big congratulations to Dave for bagging himself a parkrun PB!

Whether you ran, jogged, walked, supported, or volunteered — well done to everyone!

Another busy week at Widnes Running Club
We kicked things off with rainy interval sessions led by Fiona, while John wrapped up his block of Fartleks at Wednesday track with a real bang. Thursday brought another solid round of muster runs to round out the week.

This weekend, a fantastic group of our runners are taking on the Warrington Way — in solos, pairs, and relay teams.

This last week our ladies Captain Dawn (of the planet of the apes) Hignett rolled back the years and performed strongly at the Halewood 5k. Keeping her company and performing equally well were Rob (Roy) Ladanowski and Long John Houghton. Well done x

There was a huge WRC turnout at the St Helens Striders Trail 5. A very popular race for those who love a muddy trail. Those in attendance were:

Another popular but challenging race is the 13 Arches Half Marathon. Taking on this challenge were:

Lastly Paul Busow Paul Busow, so good they named him twice took on and conquered the New York Marathon on Sunday. Well done Paul x

Our very own King of the Hill(s) Rob Lloyd enjoyed himself at the Brontë Way Fell Race. 8 miles of undulating fun chased down with a pint of soup, a pint of coke and a roll (I’m hoping this refers to a bread bun).

Cast your minds back to the halcyon day where you were gifted an extra hour in bed at the end of that week x

(Baby) David (off of The Royle Family) Cross put in a huge performance at the Frankfurt Marathon. Well done x

Amy Bird(‘s custard) had a busy day on the Saturday. Our Amy paced at the Macclesfield 10k in the morning and then bravely ran the Petzl Delamere Night Runner event in the evening. Phew ! X

Also braving the darkness, the mud and Old (Greg) Pale at Delamere were:

She’s since completed multiple races and is now aiming for a half marathon in April, with her sights set on a marathon by her next milestone birthday. Across the country this morning, many runners may have turned to their partners or kids and asked, “Are you sure you want to run parkrun today?” With rain bouncing off the pavements, Halloween face paint still clinging on, and bellies full of last night’s sweets (for some, the Ring doorbell firmly unplugged to avoid more trick-or-treaters!), it wasn’t the easiest start to a Saturday. One member even seemed to think “Ushaw?” was a question about whether they were parkrunning — rather than the destination itself!

But as we all know, parkrunners are a determined bunch, and Widnes members are no exception. 54 club members took part this morning at 20 different parkrun locations.

As well as Ushaw Historic House, we had runners at Crosby, Croxteth Hall, Daventry, Delamere, Heartlands, Highbury Fields, Hyde, Jersey, Knowsley, Long Eaton, Northwich, Oldham, Ormskirk, Phillips Park, Rising Sun, St Helens, Sutton Manor, Wilmslow, Y Promenad-Abermaw — and, of course, a strong turnout at our home event in Widnes.

And finally, a huge thank you to our amazing volunteers, without whom parkrun simply wouldn’t happen. Special shout-out to Liam, who took on the role of Run Director at Widnes for the first time — great job!

Whatever the weather, the Widnes spirit always shines through. See you next week!

Luckily, our members weren’t too spooked to get their training done — including Intervals with Neil on Tuesday, a Fartlek session with John on Wednesday at the track, and Thursday muster runs led by our experienced run leaders. Great effort, everyone!

Tuesday - interval training. Short but sweet repeated efforts that help you get strong
Wednesday - track night led by one of our 3 qualified coaches. Progressive sessions lasting 6 weeks designed to improve your speed endurance
Thursday - club Muster runs - all speed abilities catered for. All groups led by our illustrious team of Run Leaders.

Who did what in the week ending 19th October?
Danny (Elfman) Byrne was obviously feeling strong from his recent marathon success and set a new V45 club record of 37:14 at the Trafford 10k. David (Criss) Cross faired well at the same event x

At the Green Drive 5 Mile Hello John (gotta new motor) Houghton flew around the course in an impressive time x

Drinking the island of Majorca dry and taking on the Palma10k & Half Marathon were:

Halloween is just around the corner, and our members weren’t too spooked to get their Saturday run in as we celebrated the final parkrun of October!

This week saw 56 club members (plus a few of our recent C25K graduates making their return to parkrun 👏) take part in 26 different events across the UK and beyond.

Our runners could be found at:
Birkenhead, Bolton, Bramhall Park, Clermont Waterfront, Croxteth Hall, Delamere, Ellesmere Port, Knowsley, Nidda, Normanby Hall, Ormskirk, Osterley, Phoenix, Princes, Roberts Park, Rosliston, Selby, Shorne Woods, Skipton, St Helens, Sutton Manor, University Parks, Worsley Woods, Woodbank, York, and of course, a fantastic turnout at our home event in Widnes. 💛

Many of our members tested how the latest hill training block has been paying off by tackling some of the hillier courses this weekend — brave stuff as those autumn climbs start to bite!

🎉 Special shoutouts to:
• John, celebrating his 300th parkrun milestone – what an achievement!
• Peter, completing his final Run Director stint at Widnes after five years of incredible service – thank you for everything you’ve done for the parkrun and our running community. 👏

🎉 Meet the Couch to 5K Widnes Running Club Graduates – Summer 2025! 🎉

Come rain, storms, or shine, these superstars have been putting in the effort and following the NHS Couch to 5K programme with the support of our fantastic coaching team — Cathy, John, Penny, and Andrew.

Today, they completed their final run at Widnes parkrun, marking the end of their journey and the beginning of many more runs to come! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

There were goodies, medals, and cakes to celebrate every step of their hard work and dedication. 🍰✨

Remember — you were a runner from that very first run in week one. 💪 We can’t wait to see our amazing graduates continue their running journey by joining more of our club sessions throughout the week! 💚

What a fantastic morning of running, walking, volunteering, and cheering! This week 71 of our members took part across 22 different parkrun events, showing off our club colours far and wide. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️💚

And that’s not even counting our incredible C25K superstars, who celebrated their parkrun graduation at Widnes parkrun this morning! 👏 A separate post (and plenty more photos!) will follow for that milestone — huge thanks to our run leaders and pacers for their support. 💪

🏃‍♀️ Widnes Running Club parkrun Round-Up 🏃‍♂️

Saturday 11th October

It was a slightly quieter parkrun weekend for Widnes Running Club, with many of our members swapping their barcode for race bibs at the Everton 10k, and our resident trail enthusiast Rob heading for the hills at the Rivington Half Marathon.

Even so, 52 WRC members still got their Saturday fix across 14 different events — proving that even with races, birthdays, and blustery weather, we can’t resist a parkrun!

This weekend brought double birthday joy for Tracy and Penny — both October babies (it seems to be a popular birthday month for WRC members 😉).
Tracy celebrated with a parkrun away day at Stamford Park, while Run Leader Penny sensibly took a rest day to save her legs for a trail half tomorrow — excellent forward planning!

Our members attended Brickfields Park, Croxteth Hall, Delamere, Knowsley, Northwich, Nova Prestatyn, Penrith, Phoenix, Preston, Princes, Sutton Manor, Witton, and of course, there was a strong home turnout at Widnes.

As always, a huge shoutout to the WRC members who donned the hi-vis this weekend — whether you were cheering, timekeeping, scanning, or tail walking, you make parkrun happen and keep the Widnes spirit alive. We really appreciate you! 💚

They say running is cheaper than therapy… although with the price of trainers these days, we’re not so sure. 👟😂

At Widnes Running Club, we know running isn’t just about fitness — it’s about friendship, fresh air, and the post-run gossip that counts as cardio in itself.

Running helps our bodies, but it also gives our minds the space they need to breathe. So if life feels a bit uphill right now, come and join us — no pace too slow, no story too long. 💚
