Widnes Running Club Social Media Roundup -18th Jan Widnes Running Club Social Media Roundup -18th Jan 2026

Welcome to the latest Widnes Running Club social media roundup for we18th Jan
Only the one race to report on this week. But what a race. WRC had a great presence there and many of whom put in PB performances. However equally as many dug deep and worked hard to get round on what is a challenging course at a race held at a tough time of the year. It was wet, it was cold, perfect racing conditions x
Those who gave it a go were:
Ryan (Pitch) Black, Harry (1st club finisher & second in his age category) Hignett, Claire (Richards) Skea, Peter (The Boss) Speakman,
Danny (LaRue) Byrne, Alex (well hard) Whellans, Mark (Hamill) Grady,
Paul (can’t see the trees for the) Woods, Stephen (Hendry) McNicholas, David (Beckham) Jones, Russell (Harty) Hardman, Mark (the dude) Worthington, Penny (wise the dancing clown) Worthington, Lee (Evans) Dolbear, David (Hot) Cross (Buns), Hayley (a vegan is not just for January) MacGugan, Jonathan (John) Williams, Caroline (Kenneth) Williams, Becky (Harry) Potter, Jan (the marathon queen) Swales and joined at the hip to Julie (Susanna) Reid, Grace (Potty Mouth) Gorst and Danielle (she swims like a fish) Simons x
Well done all

Saturday 17th January parkrun Round-Up On the wee Saturday 17th January parkrun Round-Up

On the week of Widnes parkrun’s 11th birthday, 63 members were out in force across 19 different events. It was a week for the hills, with many opting for noticeably hillier courses and reporting some tough but rewarding parkrun efforts.

A big congratulations to Claire, who celebrated her 25th volunteer credit 🎉. Meanwhile, there were plenty of smiling faces at East Park, with some ticking off their Compass Challenge.

This week’s parkrun adventures took our members far and wide, with visits to Birkenhead, Brickfields Park, Croxteth Hall, East Park, Errdig, Flint Castle, Greenfield Valley, Haughmond Hill, Northwich, Pennington Flash, Phoenix, Princes, Queen’s (Glasgow), Ruthin Memorial Playing Fields, St Helens, Sutton Manor, Warrington, Woodhouse Moor — and, of course, a strong home turnout at Widnes.

As always, a huge thank you to our hi-vis heroes who give up their time to make parkrun possible every single week. 💙

Saturday 10th January parkrun Round-Up Our third Saturday 10th January parkrun Round-Up

Our third parkrun of the year already, and once again we were met with tricky weather conditions, with many events cancelled due to ice and snow. Despite this, 57 very happy (and very cold!) members made it to parkrun today across nine events: Alderley Park, Brickfields Park, Delamere, Flint Castle, Irchester Country, Lytham Hall, Morecambe Prom and St Helens.

We also had almost record numbers at Widnes, with over 600 runners taking part — the second-highest attendance there after Christmas Day.

There were some great milestones to celebrate too, with Dawn completing her 250th parkrun, and Stephen and Roy reaching their 100th and 200th. Congratulations to you all!

If you braved the frosty conditions this morning, well done — and to everyone who volunteered, an extra big thank you. Without you, parkrun simply wouldn’t be possible.
Training sessions resumed this week following a Ch Training sessions resumed this week following a Christmas break for our coaches and run leaders. We hope everyone enjoyed a festive period filled with joy, good food, and perhaps some new running gear!

A flurry of snow this week meant our Tuesday session had to be cancelled — safety always comes first.

On Wednesday, Fran led a great track session featuring some longer efforts, ideal for those training for a half marathon. Thursday saw our run leaders back in action, guiding runs around Widnes and helping everyone ease back into routine.
Another Double parkrun Round-Up – Thursday 1st & S Another Double parkrun Round-Up – Thursday 1st & Saturday 3rd January 2026 🏃‍♀️🏃

The first parkruns of 2026 🥳

All parkrun lovers across the country were given a bonus Christmas gift this year, with an extra parkrun under the tree. Unfortunately, frosty conditions meant that some events across the North West had to be cancelled.

On New Year’s Day, we had 69 members running at 12 different events. These included Croxteth Hall, Greenfield Valley, Haigh Woodland, Lister Park (Bradford), Phoenix, Sale Water, The Wammy, Warrington, Wepre, Whitley Bay, York, and of course a large turnout at our home parkrun of Widnes.

Today saw 63 members running at 12 events, with runners heading to Congleton, Delamere, Henley Wood (Oswestry), Knowsley, Orangefield, Phoenix, Sutton Manor, Warrington, Widnes, Witton, Wythenshawe and Y Promenâd, Llandrillo-yn-Rhos.

We also had some fantastic milestones to celebrate today, with Eve and Matt both completing their 250th parkrun—even though Matt didn’t realise until afterwards!

Meanwhile, Andy attended a particularly busy parkrun and ended up helping out with the finish tokens at the end. You can take the Run Director out of parkrun, but you can’t take the parkrun out of the Run Director.

As always, a huge thank you to all our volunteers who make parkrun possible. We are especially grateful at this time of year to those standing out in the freezing cold to support everyone.
2025 – what a year for Widnes Running Club! 🏃‍♂️🏃‍ 2025 – what a year for Widnes Running Club! 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️
We’ve had a fantastic year of racing, celebrating achievements, and building great friendships along the way.
Wishing everyone a very Happy 2026, full of miles, smiles, and many happy times ahead! 💚✨

Double parkrun Roundup Thursday 25th December & Sa Double parkrun Roundup
Thursday 25th December & Saturday 27th December 🎄🏃‍♀️🏃

This week our members were lucky enough to enjoy two chances to take part in parkrun.

Christmas Day brought record-breaking numbers across the country, showing that a festive morning 5k with family and friends is fast becoming as much a Christmas tradition as Christmas jumpers and over-indulging on mince pies. We had 55 of our members running across a range of events including Banbury, Ellesmere Port, Hackworth, Heartlands, Peel, St Helens, Warrington and, of course, a strong turnout at Widnes.

Saturday saw ice and frost cause cancellations across much of the North West, meaning some of our members had to travel a little further to get their parkrun fix. Despite the conditions, 47 members took part in 22 events, including Blackpool, Burnage, Cannock Chase, Chester, Crosby, Delamere, Hackworth, Irchester Country, Isabel Trail, Lyme Park, Marple, Pennington Flash, Phoenix, Poppintree, Princes, Rothay Park, Sale Water, Tawd Valley, Warrington, Woodlands (Scarborough) and Y Promenâd, Llandrillo-yn-Rhos.

A huge congratulations to David, who celebrated his 250th parkrun, and to the Blackpool crew who even managed to bump into Michael Bublé along the way!

Whether you ran or walked, well done to everyone who took part. And, as always, a massive thank you to the hi-vis heroes who stood out in the cold and gave up part of their Christmas morning to make parkrun happen 💚
